I'll be honest, I can totally see the L: Z-A starter megas being low-to mid at best while the Kalos set get the effort to make theirs look actually good (because more people been wanting Kalos megas longer than afterbirths been shitting on the new starters for not adhering to their headcanons.).

of course it will, and maybe likely Gen XI. The entire point of Megas is or Game Freak to make their favorites into broken shillmons. They aren't going to let it crate them just for them to never see at least a couple proper VGC seasons

Even that would be too weak, powercreep's made it so that mere +30% damage to moves with secondary effects is piss poor.
It'd have to basically be an entirely new original ability if you want Mega Gatr to be the monster everyone wants it to be.

I can't see it getting Strong Jaw unless it gets a new signature STAB move to make use of it. Crunch, Ice Fang or Psychic Fangs have little use on a Water/Dragon type.

It's either Dragon-type because reptile or Dark-type because Bite for Feraligatr. And Dragon is more interesting since Mega Greninja is going to be in (and none of the starter megas share types until Shitboar inevitably fuck things up)
