Having the "Team ___" be a sure thing in every game, but playing different roles is the ideal way to keep this "archetype" going while keeping room for creativity.
Autistic fans can not understand the concept, though, so even today you'll see people complaining about how much of a failure Team Yell is as villains compared to the other teams, without realizing Team Yell was not supposed to be perceived as villains, just as a side group connected to one of the characters (although, yes, they are less relevant than the other teams becase they were given a minor role)
