They made every sprite that looked great and colorful in 2d extremely washed out in 3d, defenders say it was "to imitate the water color art" when in fact it just looks like shit.

The first and third picture in the OP are pretty colorful, though, The second picture looks nothing like watercolor, watercolor uses way more white and doesn't have grey shadows like that. It's just their attempt at realism, which they did a shit job with.
