Ash actually has a drive & passion to pursue his goal and his personality is actually compelling and funny. Compared to that Liko is just " I am the girl with magic bloodline " and Roy is " I want Rayquaza because I just want it okay". Ash took only the first episode to build a huge fanbase while it has been 100 episode and I still don't know why we suppose to care for Liko and Roy.

I’ve only watched to the beginning of the Johto series but so far it’s been the most boring show let alone anime I’ve ever watched. Every episode is just about the exact god damn thing as all of the other episodes. If the gave Team Rocket their own story arch over the span of 5-10 episodes it would be tolerable but the show up in every. single. episode. and always get assblasted almost immediately. It’s so boring and lazy, and I wish they could’ve merely attempted to mixed it up. Does it get better later in the series or is it like this through all of the gens?

At the end, there is only two way an anime can run continuously for a long time --

-- A. Having an very popular character as cultural icon.
-- B. Repeating a formula in different way.

Pokemon anime had both which is why it able to continue for 26 years but now it has none.
