It wasn't because of any of those dumb reasons, it's because the only female companions Ash had are those that exist in the game even if you don't choose them. May is your rival if you choose Brendan, and Dawn if you choose Lucas, but Hilda is nowhere to be seen except the Battle Subway if you choose Hilbert. Serena still exists if you choose Calem, so that's why she was in XY, but Selene doesn't exist if you choose Elio. Same with Gloria and Victor and Juliana and Florian.
