How would you set up the types if you got to go back in time and recreate Pokémon?
Would you change weaknesses and resistances?
Would you add or remove a type?
Would you thematically change a type into something else?

Personally I'd remove Rock for sure. Rock is just not meaningfully aesthetically different from Ground. Any Pokémon that is Rock could be Ground instead. Rocks are just more specific kinds of Ground.

Types =/= Fighting styles

Fire is a type.
Water is a type.

Fighting is a style (punch, kicks, etc)
Dark is a style (bites, back stabbing, etc)

I would separate types into Elemental, and Substantial. Very few pokemon have dual types in both categories, most dual type pokemon are one of each. Pokemon that have dual types in the same category are either very unusual pokemon, or legendaries.
Substantial is what the pokemon IS. Bug, Dragon, Fighting, Bird, Fish, Fighting, Ghost, Rock, Steel.
Elemental is what the pokemon DOES. Fire, Ice, Electric, Psychic, Wind, Ground, Aura, Dark, Poison.

A few existing types would be split into a Substance and an Elemental type, like Flying. Bird is the Substantial, Wind is the Elemental, or Fighting, Fighting is the Substantial type, Aura is the Elemental. Normal doesn't exist/is just not having a Substantial type.
Elemental types would be offensively biased in terms of matchups, Substantial would be defensively biased, but both would be active to some extent to both sides. There would end up being more typings, and some typings might end up rare, like Aura.

I like this idea, though. There's definitely a disconnect between how the types are currently presented, that results in stupid shit like trying to invent things for Bug to be good against.

Should have been called "Sky" or "Air" or something. That way it's obvious that just because a Pokémon can fly doesn't mean it's flying type.

I don't like how these two types are entirely based on a kind of animal appearance. This massively limits visual design possibilities and is also confusing when something that's clearly a dragon or an insect is not dragon or bug.

This is going to be super nitpicky, but I just think it's a little weird that there's a distinction between two different kinds of normal physical combat. Like, stuff like Tackle, Multi-attack, sword dance, mega punch, all seem like, well, fighting.
I understand why you'd want to make a distinction between "fighting" and "normal" pokémon, but I could totally see a world where all fighting pokémon were just all considered normal type because they're just doing fairly standard physical combat. And then the weirder moves like Hyperbeam and explosion could have been from a different type.

If we aren't removing any pokemon, then:
I'd add a type to represent non plant and non animal organisms, such as fungus and bacteria. Biotic type. It bothers me that mushroom-based pokemon have grass type.
I'd clarify Dragon type as an Arcane/Mana type early on, still named Dragon type though. I'd keep Rock and Ground as seperate, burrowing animals and sand should be seperate from pokemon made of rocks.
I could see Flying being renamed to Air type, but Flying hoenstly just sounds better to me. Many flying type pokemon aren't using air and wind, they're doing aerial movements and such.

It does however allow for the creation of more Bug and Dragon pokemon, I feel like we wouldn't get nearly as many Bugs and Dragons if we never got these types.

Bug sure but not so sure about Dragon. A lot of the Dragon types we already have don't really scream dragon and you wouldn't know they were supposed to be draconic if you didn't see that they were Dragon type.

Remove Dark and Fairy. Those two types are vague and arbitrarily given to things. Also there has to be a better way to represent Ground and Rock. It’s odd they’re completely separate, why are they not combined into an Earth type or something? Like at least Ice is more aligned with the concept of “cold” than strictly frozen water.

Renamed a few types, condensed Rock+Ground, Fairy+Psychic, Dark+Ghost, got rid of Dragon, Bug.

I also made a table of good type combos.
