I felt that way as a kid, though I do prefer the full experience nowadays.
And even back then, I'd roleplay by doing Charmander vs. Squirtle, then Charmander & Weedle vs. Squirtle & Caterpie, then drop the roleplay and do Legendaries vs. shitmons.

These are 6 rental pokemon I enjoyed on stadium 1 and 2. I enjoyed battles more than mini games. I didn't get either of those games on switch because they're locked behind a subscription service as temporary games instead of downloads for keeps.
