But Ash-Greninja technically had no ability. They could very well be even if the new ability makes up for the item lost. The stats are a toss up because Ash-G got +110, but only 10 went into speed and 50 went into attack.

That's because Pokemon had a major hard on for dragonball due to the super reviving the series. Ash Greninja was a glorified saiyan reference. That's why XYZ hard shifted to it being the main pokemon ash was working with along with the fact every battle it was in was some hyped up dbz shit. Just look at Ash vs Diantha. Dragonball as fuck if I've ever seen it with shadow ball and water shuriken spam.

you know painting things with broad strokes is a bad idea when you want the whole picture, right? naruto was likely an influence on greninja's creation and definitely relevant to its popularity, and as the other anon said DBS was DEFINITELY instrumental in the creation of ash greninja and the direction they took it - and all that to say nothing of mega evolution as a concept being a wholesale DBZ reference as well. other things existing doesn't erase the imprint of those influences.

Do people really not like Ash-Greninja? It's a silly concept but he got me pretty far n the Battle Tree. 79 consecutive wins IIRC. It was a mega without needing the item for it which was fucking fantastic.

GF is assblasted people prefered Greninja over Charizard and they made gen 9 with the idea of megaevolution returning so it was the perfect excuse to remove Ash's pseudo-mega and replace it for a real one, making it so the XYZ flashbacks in the last episodes of the gen 8 anime show a non-transformed Greninja instead and then making it so the ability that transforms it just boosts its stats normally in the games.

You can argue the extra 10 in the 100 stat boost that megas got made it better than megas. Also water shuriken got a boost as well which is something megas couldn't do.

Depends mostly on the ability I guess. There's no way they are changing the type so it's the same as Ash-Greninja's, and Ash-Greninja stats are basically a straight upgrade of the original's spread so I doubt they are gonna modify them much, they would have to min max it even more and it would be crazy boosted. That and the fact Bond Phenomenon boost is actually 10 more points on BST than Megaevolution and the big disadvantage of not being able to hold an item because it's locked on the Greninjite makes it very likely to be weaker, so it's gonna need an ability that gives it the edge over Ash-Greninja's superior BST and item potential.
Personally I would like it to get an unique ability but considering abilities don't seem to be a thing in Z-A I doubt they are gonna create one for Champions only.

I think that's my biggest problem with the idea so far. Greninja has a lot of sauce, some people even dislike Ashninja because it's "Greninja but more" but you can't deny it capitalized on its strengthes and the anime choreography was really cool. I'm really excited for Meganinja but I don't see it moving and fighting like the original Greninja does so idk

What bothers me is that this thing has Ash's traits, instead of being its own thing like all Mega Evolutions that don't take on human traits.
Therefore, it's inconsistent that anyone other than Ash could use it. It takes away from the Pokémon's natural aspect.

It's not really the same thing.
If a trainer dresses to resemble their Pokémon, it's not a problem.

On the other hand, when the Pokémon takes on the traits of a trainer, it's different because it's no longer its own independent entity.

Irida and Adaman resemble Dialga and Palkia because they worship them as gods.

Dialga is its own entity, which initially has nothing to do with Adaman. It was Adaman who decided to imitate it.
