It's not neccesarily the fact that its 3D, its that for whatever reason the modern pokemon models look like shit.
Look at Hitmontop. In the N64 he actually stood on his head, now in nu pokemon he just awkwardly hops around rightside up

Gen 3 sprites were the worst ones, they shouldn't be used as examples. Gen 5 doesn't count being animated in such a dumb way

the only thing models have for them are the pokemon-amie 3ds animations, but even then, gamefreak are retarded enough not to reuse them.
BW were on the right track, but DS resolution was too bad for a good execution

I love Gen 3 but I think they can be hit or miss depending on which game you're talking about. Pretty much every Kantomon has a way better sprite in FRLG than in RSE
