The premise of OP is that if 3D was never switched to, we
-'d still be getting more new 2d games, which would look like OP instead of what we get now, which looks much worse.
Here's a thought experiment: Imagine RBY was an SNES title or something and was always 3d until XY, which switched to 2D. All the 2D games would look better than the 3D ones purely by virtue of being newer. You'd be there screeching that 2D was a mistake and we wouldn't understand why you would say such a thing since all the 3D games would look worse than all the 2D games, including the most recent 3D game.
