Has the rising popularity of Pokemon-like games (Digimon, Palworld, Megami Tensei) been caused by disappointment in the current state of Pokemon? Or are Pokemon fans who have played every game just wanting more monster-collecting games but in a slightly different flavor?

As a Digimon fan. I really don't know about this.
The new game looks cool, but Digimon struggles with sustained growth.

SMT has gained popularity as a side effect of Persona's popularity catching interest for it. Digimon is catching attention because Time Stranger is the first time a Digimon game has an actual fucking budget, so of course thats going to turn heads.
The rhetoric around Palworld was admittedly built around this though, even if the main reason it blew up is the sheer ridiculousness of it.

Personally I don't get the hate too much. I do however enjoy monster collection games with a large number of monsters that aren't just color swaps. Hopefully more show up before the games, like all genres for some reason, evolve into open world survival craft games like animals becoming crabs.
