Were Red, Blue, and Yellow or was the Shudo anime/tv show more instrumental to Pokemon's rise and success as a multimedia franchise?

many won't want to hear this but it was the anime, every late millenial and early Z knows the anime theme song because it was on TV all the time during our childhood, but on the other hand a lot of them didn't even know there WERE games until several generations in, if at all. there are a lot of people who thought it was just the TV show and the TCG.

What kind of broke-ass hood did you grow up in? Every kid in america had a gameboy unless they were a diehard Sega fan, or their family couldn't afford one. And it wasn't exactly expensive.

Speaking personally, I had a gameboy pocket but didn't have cable, so no pokemon anime. But I sure as fuck played the game.

The games were bigger in Japan, but the anime and merch pushed the shit out of things in America because they were far more accessible and affordable compared to vidya.

Seconding this. My dad was a system administrator and software developer who bounced around a bunch of different companies so we had a bunch of computers and good internet (for dialup, we had a second dedicated line so picking up the phone wouldn't disconnect you) and hosted lan parties all the time. Didn't have any interest in a console until the ps2.

Anime introduced the west and was the "main face" of pokemon for many in the early years but pokemania wouldn't have happened without the show, games, and cards all going at once. smash bros coming out a year after probably also helped more than people realize.
Plus having rivals like digimon and yugioh didn't even slow it down and only gave it more value.
