What is there to say? They're pretty much all irrelevant and mogged. Pokemon has the best games, the best anime, best manga, etc.. maybe YGO might be better as a TCG but I never played PTCG so I won't speak on that.

I've never played an SMT. I've only played Purse Owner Five.
YGO is a scam and an overcomplicated OTK mess.

I played Digimon Cybersleuth, and honestly, it was... enjoyable. Maybe some of the other Digimon games were better but Cybersleuth was way too easy on the normal difficulty for a beginner I think. It was my first game and I never even had to swap out the three Digimon that would be sent into battle. I'd Digivolve them, but I never actually had to swap them out during or outside of battle because they were weak or low HP or something. The story was interesting at first but then you get your body back and a lot of the missions are repetitive. Also what's with there being no soundtrack at all for most areas? Lastly, the DigiFarm makes leveling up Digimon too easy. It was generally enjoyable but I didn't see what made it so much better than any Pokemon game.
>Yo-Kai Watch
First off, I have to mention how mismanaged Yo-Kai Watch was in the west. I bought 1, 2 and Blasters, but couldn't buy 3 because they only released like 5 copies in the west. I had to pirate the game. Aside from that though they're all pretty solid RPGs. Their stories are fun even if they're not too complex and there's good humor. There's a lot of side content too, which is always a plus, but a good amount of Yo-Kai designs I just don't care for like I do with Pokemon, especially the 'Merican Yo-Kai. Stinkers like Love-Torn and Putasockinit just pale in comparison to Pokemon designs unfortunately, even if there are cool ones I like like Toungus and Legsit.

Until you realize that a lot of Digimon are fucking huge once they leave the Rookie/Child level. Obstagoon is 5 foot 3 while the normal non-X-antibody version of Ogremon here is like twenty feet tall in the anime.

Then you are not thinking of a "Digimon partner".
The partner comes with a digivice and the temporary evolutions. And you don't need to be a "chosen protagonist", that depends on the series. In Adventure, tamers are chosen few, but in other series they are just any person who bonds with Digimon they meet (even in Adventure the concept of chosen children is done by the end of the series when pretty much everyone gets a partner)

I love them. I love collecting and raising monsters. I try to 100% games before I move on though so I haven't played as many as I would like.

Digimon is great and has a lot of variety. This can make it kind of unfocused at times as a series, but it does the things that everybody wishing Pokemon would do. It experiments and changes up the formula with all the pros and cons that comes with that. Also really cool settings.

SMT is really cool for how it uses real world influence without compromise. Many things will reference mythology, SMT bold face has Thor nuke Japan. It makes the games downright educational about world religions and myths. And the topics and philosophies that the stories tackle aren't something many series dare to tread, combined with a focus on unique style, make really memorable games.

Monster Rancher is really cool because it is a series that focuses heavily on the raising part of monster taming games. You focus entirely on raising one monster at a time and there is actual stakes because your monsters have limited life span. It can be heartbreaking when a monster you've raised finally passes on. The designs of the monsters are a cool in that (almost) every species has a subspecies for breeding with each other species. So if you like one species you'll have a whole bunch of different forms that you can raise.

Yugioh is a card game so it doesn't really fit with the others as a monster taming game. I like these concepts and world building, but a cardgame is a card game.

Cassette Beasts was really fun with its fusion system and has some really cool monsters. It lacked a sort of monster buddy feel due to transforming into the monster instead of taming them. But the freedom of customization in moves is really cool. And every mon having a shiny for every different type really makes customization freeform.

Trying to remember some more obscure ones I've played.

FateGo and other waifu gacha games are honorary monster taming games in my book, and they can be fun, but the crippling of the actual gameplay to encourage monetization really hurts them at times.

Monster Crown was really fun to play because it REALLY feels like an old retro game. Specifically the amateur quality and copious amount of bugs made the game feel like a forgotten older game instead of a retro style modern game. Its lack of popularity also made it so that you can't easily just search up any information you want about the game so you're forced to play it blind in pre internet style. A lot of the really bad bugs have been ironed out so you can play it safer these days, but it honestly really feeds into the 'dark edgy pokemon like world' the game is set in. Lapras eat the first gym leader after you beat him. And the fact that every monster has a completely different form depending on what type you breed it as AND that any monster can be bred with the color pallet of another monster means you can truly customize your creature.

Just finished Cassette Beasts recently. Great game, nice twist to the elemental interactions, and great music. For moments exploration feels a bit empty but that did not make it less enjoyable for me.

Would recommend to anyone to give it a try.

Fossil Fighters should have become a mainstay nintendo franchise. I've played a lot of Digimon games both new and old and its seemingly not for everyone. Its very fun for me though. SMT is a classic and I recommend it to most. Yu Gi Oh is seemingly hard to get into. Palworld is fine if you can get into sandbox open world like games that is reminiscent of ark. I heard Monster Rancher is good. I didn't play anything else on the list.

Cybersleuth is absolutely the watered down version, even on hard the game wasn't difficult until the final optional demon lords. If you want a "harder" (more like tedious) experience, check out the DS games, their digifarm mechanics are more mandatory and really forces you to grind for your digimons.

So many different adaptations of varying quality, definitely harder to keep track of. Pokémon has a sense of consistency, even if it's kind of a gradual decline in a number of ways, but Digimon is harder to digest. That being said, Pokémon doesn't really excite me anymore while Digimon being a wild west is more inherently interesting.

Really solid, love the atmosphere and challenge. Coming into it from Pokémon, you want to treat it like monster collection, but you can't win like that. You have to be willing to sacrifice your monsters. There is no PC, only a compendium you can save instances of them to, with resummoning costing money.

After my time, I didn't touch it, and I frankly don't like what Pokémon took from its influence. I'm more interested in the Japanese mythology than the localized stuff anyway.

I like the concept of the original PS1 game with the discs and I used to watch the English dub of the anime as a kid, but I don't know enough about it to make any definitive statements.

Varying quality, you have to be into the TCG to a degree. The original manga is mostly good, falters later on, there's some real JoJo inspiration with the drama and entertainment. Each anime/manga is basically its own continuity.

now the question is what route they are going with the story, episodic adventure like Pokemon, more story driven like Digimon, or whatever Yo-kai Watch was (never watched)

Really like the anime side (Adventure, 02 and Frontier). Played World 1 a few years ago and enjoyed it. Designs are creative and often better than Pokemon ones. Strongly dislike current style for human characters which seems to be the most basic weeb crap. I was never a fan of a temporary evolution as well and this is why I stuck with Pokemon. Well, games being inconsistent played a part in it too. World series is a huge mess.

You can call me a genwunner of Yu-Gi-Oh! I know *some* stuff about the current decks (pendulum, XYZ and whatnot) but most of my memories about the series come from the first wave of media. I really liked playing Falsebound Kingdom a couple of years ago but it's a weird strategic 3v3 monster fighting RPG. Overall, I like the variety of different monsters but the card game itself seems needlessly complex and, therefore, not fun.

Tell me, anons, is it worth checking out the anime or playing the games? Yo-Kai designs are horrible but I might be interested in other aspects of the franchise. I don't mind media for kids unless it's unbearably childish. Stuff like Digimon, Beyblade and Layton is okay. Ironically, Pokemon anime bores me.

It's all about what you want to portray, digimon is all about cool and teenage angst.
Pokemon is about Freinds and Adventure.
Palworld is about Exploitation and Power.
Monster Rancher is literally about growth and breeding.
YuGiOh is just pure monsters in cards ment to kill each other.
Yokai is about Capturing and Solving Mysteries.

I switched from Pokemon to Yu-Gi-Oh when Yu-Gi-Oh came out, part of becoming a teen and that was the demographic. Yu-Gi-Oh actually has a good story and tournaments make sense. Watch the original Japanese to get around 4Kids censorship. I do not consider it monster collecting, even though TCGs are collecting of sorts and Yu-Gi-Oh gets into the monsters having real spirits, but I never thought of it like that. I also liked GX for being lighter, until it wasn't. Stopped caring by 5Ds, the game was changing too much, but card games on motorcycles actually has promise and the few 5Ds episodes I saw were okay.

Looks good, and I'm glad it became a competitor to Pokemon, was darker than I expected, but I haven't played it. I barely play Pokemon these days (or any game, but I tend to like modding games more than playing these days.)

I liked the PS1 fighting game, but I never played World. I played World DS, but in the GBA there was a racing and a fighting game. I think the franchise's main is that they never mixed monster raising and RPG game properly.

I fucking love it. Played 1, 2, and Kyuuyaku. I'll eventually play Majin 1 and 2, the New Bible ones, and I'll see if I go for others. Not Demikids tho. I tried it once, and it sucked. It was like it tried to combine SMT's exp system with Pokémons, and failed in both.

nice tamagotchi sci-fi idea, somewhat stunted as a mon series by tamagotchi evolution trees being weird af and the story focusing more on the humans. feels like it should have minmaxed its focus more on one or the other (mon or human) but ended up landing somewhere in the middle where neither feels satisfying
