I think gen 6 was fine. I used to absolutely hate it, but once I played XY again and did a challenge run of sorts, I actually did enjoy it a lot more, especially once it came time to do the Battle Maison in the post-game. That alongside the PSS actually was the gen 6 experience and playing it now removes a lot of things that makes that gen enjoyable. ORAS I can take or leave but I respect them for combining the battle e-card idea and the Secret Base idea, which was something heavily underutilized with the exception of Blissey bases.
Gen 7 on the other hand was atrocious and even when Pretendo finally launches for support with these gens, I cannot find myself putting more time into it. They gave us less than a year between the base games and the Ultra games, the story was of course overbearing and rail-roady, they removed Triple and Rotation Battles and the Battle Tree was a significant downgrade as a result, and I just found this out when I was gifted a New 3DS but the performance alone on the standard 3DS model was terrible. This is very subjective, but I even hate the UI elements for gen 7. They just look gross, I can't explain it.
It's probably subjective as fuck and there are a lot of things I liked in gen 7 that were made better in gen 8 which then made Sword my second favorite game in the series, but gen 7 really felt like they were just told to have a new gen out as fast as possible.
