What other region is the most pandered to outside of Kanto? I feel there's a strong case to make for Sinnoh and Unova

Callbacks are expectation of a franchise. Seeing it evolve and grow with more of a varied identity that doesn't rely solely on the originals. it's fun to see everyone's memories matter even if they aren't as popular as other memories. When Galar does shit like "these are the most popular Pokemon in the region!" or introduces a Charizard Giga while putting it on a pedestal above the other two starters, it comes across as sad and desperate

That being said ever notice how Hoenn pandering dried up entirely the minute Masuda left. We still get tons of love for Johto, Sinnoh and Unova but Hoenn is just fucking gone now. Z-A doesn't even have any new Hoenn Megas

my suspicion is that’s because someone in gamefreak is still seething at the “battle frontier project has started” meme, so they haven’t wanted to touch hoenn since swsh
I know this is pure, concentrated copium, but I’m really hoping for delta emerald on the switch 2 that adds back the battle facilities from emerald

Sinnoh and Unova are getting a lot right now because kids who grew up with them are nostalgic adults now.
We're already moving on to Kalos pandering with Legends ZA now that Kalos kids are old enough to have nostalgia.

Kinda Johto, but i dunno if i would call it direct pandering so much as it coasts on being the "natural" follow up to Kanto and traditionally kinda ending up as "Bonus Mons" in part due being in that position in Gen 3 (Since it had Gen3 and Gen1 remakes, so Johto mons got to be the Additional Content) and it is usually not in a positive way.

Houndour/Houndoom gets a lot of mileage as a VILLAIN JOBBER for example, even getting to be one in SV.

If anything being seem as Bonus Mons for Kanto, hurt gen2 mons. Johto Pokémon were was probably the least shilled of the first 5 gens until very recently with PLA and it’s telling that unlike every other region Johto has no shillmons side from Umb/Espeon (ironically they seem to be the most shilled of the Eeveelutions), Suicune and maybe Ttar.
Ironically within the last couple years Hoeen seems to be the one be one laying behind but having top tier shillmons like Blaizken, Gardevior, Rayquaza, and having the most megas will always keep it relevant.

That's a return to form, Sinnoh already was mostly evolutions to Johto and Hoenn shitmons. Really it's shit like Hoenn and Unova going "NO THE REGION SHOULD BE MOSTLY NEW POKEMON" that hurt region identities like Johto, Sinnoh or even Kalos because those ones were more so about buffing old mons than being a brand new slate. We didn't get cross-gens again until fucking Galar and not PROPER cross-gen evos not attached to Regional Forms until PALDEA

this, they are probably the most rabid gen fanboys & fangirls of all and more numerous than johtoddlers, you'd have to be dumb not to be exploiting their devotion to it for money at every opportunity
the way I see it borts are practically the entire generation of zoomers, it's a lot of money left on the table to not pander to them regardless of what older fans think of it

Unova pandering have only just been turned up since Gen 8, excluding that one Mega Audino. But Hoenn had so much pandering since Gen 4 and no one ever dares to speak ill about it. Also, listing crossgen references don't count when every region has crossgen references and there were plenty for Hoenn in every game that came after Gen 3.

The wild part is it did this BEFORE Charizard did. Hoenn really was the franchise's darling until it just outright fucking disappears from the series. There's still a handful of references, but stuff like Iron Valiant is more Gardevoir pandering and in general I think Hoenn is now just being treated as the Gardevoir region with an occasional reference to Blaziken or the Regis lately. Game Freak are more willing to directly reference Johto, Sinnoh or Unova over Hoenn now. Maybe they just burnt out or maybe Masuda finally leaving meant they can leave the franchise's awkward growing pains behind

Neither champion from gen 3 uses it though, so gardevoir is only used by one champion (i just wasn’t a champion from its home region)
Charizard is used by both Blue and Leon and is the only mon to serve as the ace for 2 different champions
