Heatmor, Toucannon, Arceus (looks like a llama), Swampert is very clearly based at least in part on Axolotl, Slaking's line and there's a very real argument to be made Skeledirge is based on a caiman given the connections with the colonies and with how the coco is typically seen as and associated with caimans.
And there's plenty of other examples, so I wouldn't say they avoid it that much.
I really wished they did a bluejay mon, I love these little thieves.
