You're thinking about art style and no, here's the Kanto starters in the vilest most low effort art style there is and they are still leagues ahead of the bobblehead plushies in the bottom

There's so much more to art direction than the style they are drawn in. Saying "People don't hate the new Pokemon, they hate the current art direction." might as well be "People don't hate the new pokemon, they just hate the new pokemon" or essentially "People wouldn't hate the new pokemon if the new pokemon were designed differently". Well no shit

Incineroar's back just needed to be different from his front. his torso is a perfect fucking rectangle it looks so stupid
and I dob't like how "obviously a jet plane" Dragapult's head is. wish it was more subtle, I can't imagine a creature evolving to look like that

I'm more surprised by how good Rillaboom looks in that style, and although Incineroar and Urshifu are still ugly and look like villains from old cartoons, they really look like characters that would appear in the old GB version.

A big reason why I love Gen 1 era marketing, they really showcased pretty much every Pokemon in some form. Although that was mainly in the first couple of years before they'd settle on Pikachu, the starters, Mewtwo, Psyduck, Poliwhirl, Clefairy, Jigglypuff, and Meowth.

There is something incredibly charming about blocking in your art with nothing but a soft airbrush in your totally legit copy of photoshop, before they went with their subscription model.

I hate the new Pokémon because of the current art direction. Only the cross-gen evolutions and megas from this generation are not terrible because they have to adhere to the older designs.
