I think a bigger issue is that, if you buy at launch, you can’t use these Megas as part of your initial playthrough. Which is kinda annoying, especially since these are probably the most anticipated Megas.

Why were fans fine with Mega Blaziken in XY being locked behind an online-required limited time promotion prior to the release of ORAS or Ash Greninja locked behind an online-requried SM demo that you can no longer download? How about all those cross-save "bonuses" that require you to purchase other $60 games? Or those in-game legendary events that are all on-cart but require a limited time item that you get from some event that was run only once ever and then never again.

Save for a year and get the NS2 when Gen 10 comes. Which I doubt will in 2026, knowing ZA has online modes and a fucking DLC. Why would they kill a game like that.
Arceus died because it had no postgame content besides filling the Dex. No PVP to keep it alive like every Pokémon had before.

And for the 30 Anniversary they have Champions and they can promote it like "Pokémon Ultimate Battling Experience"

Nah. We already know this DLC's main content is dropping February 28th, two days after Pokemon Day. They can give us a final overview trailer of Mega Dimensions during the presentation and then announce Gen 10, no worries on their backs about it.

Also keep in mind that Gen 10 won't be able to be properly marketed until June-July, so that gives the DLC plenty breathing room once the initial hype of "YOOOOOO NEW REGION AND NEW STARTERS, BOX LEGENDARIES" dies down.

They wouldn't make a 30$ DLC if it wasn't a long-term story DLC like The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero. Their DLCs usually come with 2 parts, one at spring/summer the other at winter.

And so why did they give Z-A online features and a ranked mode with rewards. It made sense with Arceus for being a Single Player only.

Because LZA was meant to release in 2024, but they had to delay due to Switch 2 delays, and Nintendo refused to let them release the Switch 1 edition on its own since LZA was very obviously meant to goad people into being early Switch 2 adopters, hence its multiplayer functionality, same way LGPE had multiplayer functionality to goad people into being early Switch 1 adopters.

Not the case. We already know Mega Stones are held items because they're distributing a Ralts holding Gardevoirite as an early adopter incentive, possibly even the only way to GET Gardevoirite without trading or injecting.

Also if they made it so Mega Stones can't be held items, you open up a powercreep can of worms by making it so every Mega is now Rayquaza, being able to both hold an item AND Mega Evolve, which would be pants shittingly terrifying on mons like Salamence, Kangaskhan and Mewtwo.

Yes, that's kind of the point of Champions. It's the central hub of competitive play going forward, and that includes being the host game of VGC, because they want to remove comptard autism from the mainline games in order to make their jobs easier.

Because this is basically Mega Evolution: The Game. All the advertising focuses on Megas, they’re the only new “mons,” and the DLC is similarly Mega-focused.
Plus, with permanent EXP share you’ll level really fast and probably have most final stages by midgame. The last games with Megas still had optional EXP share, so you leveled slower and wouldn’t have a ton of time to use Megas during the story anyway.
