Rather than getting back into genwars, can we talk about subs again? It seems PM is generally considered the only really good ones, and SOS is apparently trannyslop. I'm old enough to remember P-O, who in a better world would've given us the whole Original Series long before SOS did it.

Sea of Serenity have almost finished covering the currently unsubbed episodes. They are about half way through proofreading the AG era of the anime with all of the "translation" (and I use that term lightly) already done.

Something I wonder is, when SOS have finished this will any other fansub groups even bother? It seems to me that most likely SOS is going to be the only option. I can't see other groups dedicating the years required to undertake such a massive project that's already been done by others, regardless of the fact that it's low quality trannyslop as you rightly point out.

If there are any millionaires reading, go contact the PocketMonsters group and ask them how much money they would need to agree to do the whole thing. Short of that, or official subs which are probably never going to happen, I don't see any improvement on the horizon.

The verdict? There's only one good romance in Pokémon and that's the Yancy/Curtis sidequest from B2W2. Everything else is shit.

Come to think of it, how many "filler episodes" are actually good?

The Regina episode comes to mind, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like most fillers are loved because they have a cute COTD in them. Not that I complain though, cute COTDs are based.

Surprisingly, a lot of BW's fillers could be pretty good. The Gothitelle episode early on was particularly good, as was the Zoroark episode during the Decolore arc. XY had really solid fillers, too, as everyone knows, with the crossdressing Serena taking on a life of its own with fan art, fanfics, and memes. For AG, I particularly recall the time-travel AG episode with May and Meowth to be so good that they could've done a movie with that plot imo.

My issue with Pokemon the Series as I've grown up is that I just don't like Team Rocket when they're not needed. I know that's haram, but it really is TOO MUCH that they *must* cause or be the fault of most fillers. Like, why is getting to watch movies in a featured PotD need a TRio plot for it in a random AG episode for Camerupt?

I think that's why I like early BW so much. TR may be generic, but them not suffocating the show every single episode was such a breath of fresh air.

One positive change BW made that continued into XY, SM, and even JN was that it set the standard that TR didn't need to be in every single episode. They could disappear for several episodes at a time and leave the MCs to their own thing, then reappear later when a particular plot wanted them.

Wish they did that several gens sooner. TR were easily the weakest part of the anime simply because they made sure almost every episode had a miniature filler arc.

Genius actually understands that self-contained episodes are the actual meat of every long-running anime. This is especially true for very formulaic series like Pokemon where plot-relevant episodes mostly boil down to Ash capturing new Pokemon or fighting another gym leader or vaguely retracing game plot in other ways.

Unironically, after the end of XY have the Kalos gang go to Hoenn so and have Ash challenge to Hoenn Battle Frontier. It would be a nice mirror to Hoenn where they challenged the Kanto Battle Frontier. Gen 6 was a fairly short generation, I might just be getting dementia but as far as I recall it was cut short. No third versions, rushing straight on to gen 7. I would have paired that along with a Z version and extend gen 6 by another year to year and a half.

A Hoenn Battle Frontier final arc of the generation 6 anime would also more easily dovetail with Serena going there after the series. It wouldn't be as out of the blue or random as it was in reality. Have her get to know May while there and near the end come to the decision that she's going to stay in Hoenn for a while rather than return to Kalos just yet.

Give more plot and screentime to Goodra and Noivern, and have Ash reach out to Iris about them given that they're dragon types. It would fit with Iris' dragon type focus and I don't imagine it's much of a stretch to imagine she would be up for going to Kalos to see new (to her) dragon types.

I like the comfy filler episodes. It can be mind numbing torture at times if you're trying to binge watch through the entire series in chronological order but the anime was not made with that in mind and it's important to keep that in mind. You can spend a few weeks watching Kanto and Johto whereas in real life it took YEARS for the anime to get that far. If you space it out and don't overdo it the filler is really nice, once it's a good episode which most of the early ones are.

If it took this long for such a well-known anime from the '90s and '00s with no official subs to get fansubs at all for every episode, then chances feel slim to hopeless. While I'm sure that we're not the only ones dissatisfied with quality of SOSSubs, the amount of episodes that need to be redone could deter other groups from taking it on the first place.
Possible solutions:
>Official subs pipe dream
>Have multiple fansub groups who each take on a specific series
>Have one fansub group that can give out better results do it, even it takes another 6 years
>Vigilante editor that can fix the names and terms, even if that doesn't fix the other translation issues

I agree, I really like the dub and it's peak comfy.

However, consider this. The dub is good yes, but the original in Japanese is different from the dub, tonally and otherwise, that it feels like an entirely different show. So why not have the best of both worlds? Having both the dub and subtitles gives you 2 good shows. Going back and watching the sub after having seen the dub, it feels completely new.

The issue I had with Iris is the same I had with early Misty - she didn't even seem to like Ash. And I mean as friends. Ash had a banther with May (and later Misty after she chill down) and it felt they were friends even while bickering. Iris seemed like she wasn't particularly close to Ash.
