I do not see what justified the creation of these games. They added nothing meaningful to the formula unlike X&Y.

Ehh not really. Most Hidden Abilities are tolerable and many can be negated or countered. Megas on the other hand are much worse. Many VGC and Smogon players view Gen 6 and 7 as the dark days, as well as the creative days because there were a lot of people coming up with niche uses for Megas, or specialized counters for certain game breaking Megas.

Agreed. I prefer BW myself but XY were pretty good too. Honestly playing them together is an interesting experience.

Given how bad DP was I'm not surprised Masuda just wanted to make a better game out of the very solid basic combat gameplay. On the other hand I'm not surprised that XY changed the type matchup table and it and later games relied on gimmicks instead because where do you go from there? This is on top of Masuda moving towards simultaneous international release for marketing reasons, those central gimmicks are typical "to sell toys" shit you see in a lot of series, especially in tokusatsu shit that's one of Pokemon's major inspirations.
Back to the central point though, I think iterating on a good idea is sometimes really important. If you only go for innovation sometimes you lose some core aspect and it's hard to backtrack on it. I guess what I'm saying is that I liked most of the streak from Super Star Ultra to Star Allies and I like 3D World, and all those games just iterate on the same basic gameplay but the basic gameplay is solid so who gives a shit.

I regularly compete in real life VGC tournaments and I made it to Worlds both this year and last year. I'm also an active member of both the VGC and Smogon communities. I know competetive far better than you could possibly be.

Also, they did what all games should do, make you use the new Pokémon only until postgame, then unlock everything before so you can use it.

They had the balls to do it with BW, then pussied out in BW2. But at least we saw people actually using the new guys instead of looking for Gengar, Gyarados and the usual suspects

X and Y introduced mega evolution and introduced ride Pokémon and more open areas (lumoise city) it also introduced Emma, who’s very nice and I’m excited to see her in ZA
