I would know, I game on non-Nintendo consoles and look at the achievement rate of certain achievements, trophies etc for in-game milestones and for most games there's a massive falloff just after starting let alone the halfway point.
Often times it's less of a skill issue and more of a time investment issue.
The argument that someone is falling off because of goddamn Tulip of all characters, however, is still silly. Anyone who isn't beating SV isn't beating it because the game is too hard, they're not beating it because it's boring and they have other things they either need to do or would prefer to do, given just how brain dead easy modern Pokemon games are.
And even then, such people wouldn't be concerned in this conversation. If that were the case, people expressing sentiment like modern MonHun being too easy could be invalidated simply by virtue of most people not even breaking high rank given how low attainment of that is.
When the number of people playing a game is higher, the number of people who fail to finish it is also higher in turn, that's just common sense. It's only natural the second best selling games in the series would have a higher number of people falling off. Especially when a number of those people have full time jobs, children to take care of or a lack of PokeTism. But that is not what's being discussed, what is being discussed is difficulty, and Tulip is not a challenging fight. Nor is ones lack of time or motivation a relevant to a game's difficulty.
