Smogon has only even touched Freeze as a status condition in Gens 1 and 2, back when Freeze was even stronger.
If fact, because Freeze WAS stronger back in the day, and was changed multiple times and even reworked shows that GameFreak cares more about Freeze than Smogon does.

The only thing that should change for freeze is how thawing works. Keep the current mechanics of using certain moves and the random chance, but then just change so that if you're hit with any direct damage move it thaws you but is a critical hit (you shatter the target to break it out of freeze). Suddenly freeze now has actual counterplay with side attacking your partner or switching out and switching back in on a resisted move to force a thaw.

If you're talking about competitive obviously you have Lum which is useful for EVERY status condition, your own ice type to be immune to freeze, anything with fire moves or scald, anything with an ability that makes it immune to either specifically freeze or status, anything with covert cloak, and more
So yes you absolutely CAN prepare for freeze
If GameFreak were retarded and made a mon that had a broken as fuck 50% chance to freeze that the meta started revolving around there would be options to counter it

Because /vp/ is filled with children and contrarians, I feel like I have to explain why Freeze is bad by comparing it to a move that people typically like being Malignant Chain.
The first notable difference betweeb Ice Beam and Malignant Chain in this case is how fair the status condition they inflict is.
>Badly Poison does indirect damage at the end of the turn that increases in severity the longer the inflicted Pokemon stays in, and resets the damage if you switch out.
>This means you have to manage your health and turns in combat, which is a hinderance but still manageable
>Freeze on the other just completely disables the inflicted Pokemon (either 1/6th to 1/3rd of your team depending on the format) with some very specific exceptions with thaw moves
>This is a massive fuck you from the game because this often can just be worse than being KO’d, as it gives your opponent free turns do anything they want so long as you don’t thaw out which is a 20% chance normally.
Next part is the probabilities.
>Malignant Chain has a 50% chance to badly poison
>As such, it’s very realistic to expect MC to poison you, which allows bother players to plan for it and makes it an actual strategy
>Any move that can Freeze has a 10% or less chance to cause Freeze, this being the mechanism trying to balance out Freeze’s strength
>This in turn makes Freeze mechanically more frustrating since neither player can really plan for it, unless it’s 2 stall Pokemon with one having Ice Beam, which is to say you’ll only see someone fishing for Freezes in Gens 1-2 (where it was even stronger)
And last but not least being prevention/counterplay excluding universal counterplay to status
>Badly Poison can not be inflicted on 2 whole types of which also have pretty bulky Pokemon that can tank multiple hits
>Steel even being immune to Poison all together
>There are also Pokemon with Magic Guard to ignore badly poison, and Poison Heal that heals the user if it’s poisoned

Meanwhile

The underlining reason why Freeze is despised is because instead of being a somewhat thoughtful strategy both players must account for and manage, it’s just a big fuck you to whoever gets frozen.

And even GameFreak, who takes baby steps with balancing like this, understands this, which is why they have been nerfing Freeze for generations, and while developing PLA alongside SV, replaced Freeze with Frostbite. Hopefully with everyone ravving about Frostbite, Freeze is either replaced or converted to Frostbite so it can be an actual strategy in a game about strategy, and not a monumental fuck you that deliberately needs to be held back by small chances.
