Yeah? So? They are strong on non ice types for coverage. Do you really want to have 4 weaknesses for STAB ice moves on your pokemon? No, you dont.

Just make ice resist water and ground already. Only bug is worse than ice types.

If the Pokemon is fast enough, then yes, Ice STAB outweighs that. Weaknesses only matter if you get hit.

Have you looked at the stat distribution of every ice type? Most of them are gimped in some way, and the ones that weren't didn't have moves to take advantage of them until the later gens.

Mega Froslass went from 80/80 attack/special attack to 100/100 attack/special attack in 2025. What the hell is this shit?

How can base Darmanitan compare to the Galarian one when the Ice one has a fucking free Choice Band as an ability?
Also these 3 Ice types all came much later, which usually means that Game Freak puts more thought into their movepools (A.Ninetales has Aurora Veil, Freeze-Dry, Moonblast...A.Sandslash has Triple Axel...), stats (A.Ninetales is faster, A.Sandslash is bulkier), types (A.Ninetales also has Fairy, A.Sandslash also has Steel), etc...
I don't believe that Ice STAB is bad at all, but the comparison feels very unfair.

Ice is in a weird spot where it's treated as a rare/elite type akin to Dragon but it just kinda sucks
Dragon feels strong because it's weak to Ice, itself and Fairy, relatively "rare" types
Ice is weak to Rock and Fighting (and others) which are fairly common, so it doesn't feel as strong

Ice types and harsh sunlight hose the status completely. Fire and water types can also act as freeze absorbers if they have the right fire move or scald.

Knowing Game Freak, they would probably make fire types completely immune to the freeze or allow all fire type moves to thaw the user if used by a fire type the following gen to balance such a status move.

The thing about Ice is that it's actually a really good type offensively (possibly the best) and a terrible type defensively (definitely the worst).
Ice-types that are built to take advantage of its offensive strengths and bypass the defensive weaknesses (i.e. a high attacking stat and high speed) are almost invariably really good. And GF has been designing more and more Ice-types this way in recent gens.
Problem is that GF spent years designing the majority of Ice-types to be slow tanks and walls, which they just can't pull off.
Any suggested defensive buff to Ice will make the slow tanky ones decent, and make the fast ones balanced around having no resistances way too good.

My main issue is that an entire type feels shoehorned into a specific play style. Be fast or be dead. Even the stuff that’s good and slow, you run Trick Room so they’re fast anyways. Bulk is just a way to make sure they can get an attack off before they die, not make them an actual defensive wall. Types with terrible offensive profiles can make amazing offensive pokemon like Steel. The problem with buffing it is that they did hand out buffs, like the snow defense boost, Aurora Veil, Slush Rush, Freeze Dry. Buffing them at this point would just send the good stuff into overdrive, so the only way to make a defensive ice type at this point is to make some overdrive fanfic more ridiculous than Garganacl was for rock.

I think a Water resist would be the only change I'd make to the type chart. Having that relationship with Water makes sense and is a nerf to Water offensively which is good too.

I'd also like Mountain Gale distributed to more Ice-types, primarily Mamoswine. It's a good move that's useless on H-Avalugg. It would be cool to be on some more thematically appropriate mons, just not everything because it's pretty strong.

GF needs to add an Inverse Room move.
I'm not sure if it would be as good as Trick Room, but being able to build a dedicated team of mons with shitty types, and then turn the tables? I think it would see some usage.
The reason why Magic Room and Wonder Room don't see usage is because they don't patch up weaknesses of certain mons that would be good otherwise, and they're not really possible to build around.

in a vacuum, ice is one of the worst types. but so are psychic types in a vacuum, yet they're given absurd tools that let them stay not absolute dogshit. psychic surge+expanding force, stored power, teleport, psyshock, psychic noise, psychic fangs, and future sight are all absurd and unique moves that help the type stand out and not be irredeemable. snow warning+aurora veil and freeze-dry are a step in the right direction, but i think the ice type needs more absurd stuff, probably in defensive ways that can heal and don't really on snow warning.
