Not a single soul has ever used Donphan in an RSE or ORAS playthrough, you probably didn't even know it was in the Hoenn Dex

I'm talking about playthroughs of certain games specifically. Donphan is only found in an obscure part of the Safari Zone and there's multiple Ground-types people would gravitate towards earlier

Tbf Koffing is in the burned tower, at the very least I can see it having been used in an HGSS Nuzlocke. Staryu/Starmie in Hoenn is another though, very well hidden to the point where it was one of the 20~ Pokemon I had yet to find while doing my dex as a kid in Sapphire.

I just used Donphan in Ruby. He was a hell of a tank with some serious damage output once he learned earthquake.

holy shit, we actually found one! that's pretty based though. I recently did a Ruby run with some other mons that aren't frequently used in Hoenn teams [Raichu, Skarmory and Kingdra, which I just modded to evolve at Lv. 45] and it was a pretty good time

Conkeldurr in ORAS. Timburr is only available after you placate Groudon/Kyogre, going back to Granite Cave B2 then is incredibly out of the way, it's level 12 when you're about to face the 8th gym leader at minimum, there are plenty of other fighting types that you could've added to your team by now, and it's a trade evo.

do people actually use Skarmory in Hoenn teams though? like, playthrough teams, not ADV OU. Usually the Flyer is Swellow, Pelipper, Crobat, or one of the Dragons

Donphan has fantastic stats for an in-game mon. The issue is it's held back by not learning any STABs until EQ in the earlier gens, so he's just a beefy strength spammer until the end of the game. He would've been incredible in SV had he not been completely outclassed by his paradox formes that could be obtained early with 30 IVs in every stat.

Yes, Skarmory was very popular back in the gen 3 days by virtue of being one of the rare steel type pokemon, but with the utility of fly. There were two kinds of RSE players: people who caught Aron, and people who caught Skarmory.

Yeah plus it’s pretty bulky for how relatively early you get it. I’m sure Steven leading/traveling with one also inspired others to use it

I grew up with Gen 3 and a good portion of kids I knew played and I don't remember it being super common or really used on anyone's teams even back in the day. I guess people thought it was a new mon though lel so maybe some people did end up using it as their main Flyer

It's probably pretty uncommon yeah, but at least it's good with Stored Power. Most uncommon Unova mons are probably the Escavalier/Accelgor Duo along with Cryogonal

Sigilyph is genuinely top 10 mon for Unova. Definitely the best Flying Type.
>2 decent STABs when you catch it
>Both screens not too long after
>Can run Cosmic Power to be even tankier
>Has Hypnosis if you need status
>Decent coverage in Energy/Shadow Ball
Thing was so good I ended up making it my new starter

Cryogonal probably but something like Heatmor is probably the most unused since its late game, pretty meh, and you have better options by that point

I stopped doing this out of being a purist since it went against the spirit of the challenge imo but I do think it's a cool interaction with the player's game knowledge. Usually what I'll do is I'll allow 2-3 'Dupes Clause' activations per run (separate areas) only if I'm doing a super hard nuzlocke with shit like no potions allowed, since that balances things out. Starmie's a machine though, I have one in an LG 'locke I never finished and it was carrying my ass.
