I think seasons are neat conceptually, but taking real life months to get back to the one you need (aka winter because it's the only one that causes actual changes to the environment) is frustrating. It's even somewhat incongruent with real life for most of the actual year which removes some of the novelty and realism that day/night provided by matching real life.

Spring (92 days): January, (May), September
Summer (89-90 days): February, June (~10 days), October
Fall (92 days): March, July, (November)
Winter (92 days): April, August, (December ~11 days)

That's 23% of the year it matches, and 77% it doesn't, and the only solution is to make it more inconvenient. Additionally, Black and White were released in September in Japan, which makes it spring. This creates a sense of freshness, a new adventure, but school in Japan begins in April so they kind of missed the real life boat. Similarly, Black and White were released in March in North America, which is fall in-game. Fall does have a back to school sense of renewal in NA, but doing it in the real life spring season feels off.

That's just the thing, making it match real life makes it less fun but more novel. That's why time of day works, because it's both short enough to take advantage of all its mechanics while remaining novel for its realism. Day of the week also has some utility, but nowhere near as much as time of day. It's more like "Oh, it's Sunday, I can go to the department store for sales and items on offer" or "It's Saturday, I can try the Bug-Catching Competition and get a Sun Stone and Scyther, and maybe I'll farm Magnemite later to try and get a Metal Coat so I can get Scizor". Very situational.

Seasons should shift according to Gym progression. You start in summer (when children have time to play the game) where the sea level is higher, giving you chance to catch sea mons without Rod old Surf, but at the same time blocking some routes.
Autumn then is the normal map with high chance of Rain. perhaps some more marsh mons.
Winter again has ice road blocks, but also offers higher chance to catch ICE and even FIRE mons (rare types), and even has higher chance of hail, making wild encounters more difficult (Winter is probably at 6-8th Gym). Then comes Spring (default map) after the ELITE FOUR or after the Evil team plot, where you can traverse the whole map freely.

basically if seasons are used correctly, you can have Gen 4 safari zone effects on the whole map

The seasons matter so little when it comes to encounter rates. Basically only there to gatekeep Cubchoo from Route 7 and other minor encounters like Spheal in B2W2. They honestly had no gameplay reason so exist in the way they do.

Though I think it shouldn't be tied to real time, especially seasons. Pokémon isn't a long game. I think seasons should be three days or a week at most. That way, if you play on your spare time you will probably observe all seasons. Instead of juat one or maybe two in a normal playthrough.

It might be hard to kill in terms of how easy it is to reupload and host, but the playerbase is absolutely falling apart as soon as they start going nuclear because barely anyone is going to have the time and patience to coordinate and decide "This is the primary fork we're using right now" when they'll all just scatter, get bored from the lack of people, and then go to Champions.
