Because LoZ/AoL Link IS just friends with Zelda LoZ (he gets with sleeping Zelda in AoL to get his princess), LttP is friends, OoT/MM is friends, OoX, friends, WW could eventually be involved, MC is yet another friend dynamic, TP is acquaintances, PH is WW L/Z, ST could find love with each other, SS is "Link and Zelda: The Love Story", LBW is another friend dynamic (building off LttP) and BotW/TotK L/Z were so involved with each other, they didn't even TRY to hide the relationship in the original Japanese at any stage. I'll also add, the one more childish and child friendly of their big IP's shockingly doesn't hint at more mature themes (even if they also then horny and fetish post in faux innocence, I fucking KNOW someone had a catgirl Peach fantasy at Nintendo), while the one with an inherent mature air and premise DOES actually reveal romantic interests between characters. Helps each is a different incarnation to the last, but that's why they don't fuck with Mario's status quo - they ARE the same characters, canonically time-and-again so any development in one would HAVE to be carried through to next. new Zelda likely won't have a Link/Zelda romance, unless Fujibayashi steps up again.
