Charizard line also caught a bit of heat for similar reasons, though some people do like it. But its price will likely remain under Phantasmal Flames charizard sir. Almost entirely because of art.
So art appeal is a major understandable factor.
Another criticism is the switch & psychic energy gold cards are lame choices. Gold cards shoulda been Mew and the fossil items done in the style of crown zenith gold cards.
The set, since it was a special set, geared mostly towards collectors, though some cards did see competitive play (mew ex), and ditto, pidgey and dodrio to a lesser extent. It shouldnt have included a bunch of miscellaneous items/ trainers.
They seem very hodge podged into the set.
Also although Bill, Daisy, Erika, and Giovanni are very fitting for a 151 set, given the complete robustness of the set regarding the pokedex, I cant help but feel maybe all gym leaders should have been included and NPCs such as Bill & Daisy sit on the sideline, or be more comprehensive by including many more NPCs such as Mr. Fuji and Safari Warden, etc.
Still 151 remains the most collectible set to be released to date.
BB&WF came close but the set split ruined the numbering order entirely.
