With the avatar themselves being developed by a partner studio called "Very Very Spaceship", who later laid off many of its employees, including the 3D artfag who worked on the avatars.
Anyway, this change had a massive backlash. Funnily enough, the troons they were trying to please were one the most vocal against it (turns out they don't like being reminded they look like men). The only retard who liked this was a they/them woman, who happened to be the Community Developer at Niantic.
