No, that was 5 years ago when Nessa was revealed. Nobody gave a fuck about black girls during the XY era. Nobody found characters like Lenora or Olympia hot, they were forgettable and forgotten. First time Game Freak got it right was Olivia and she was dropped because Alola was a cunny region and Lusamine soaked up all the adult attention like a sponge. When it comes to overall popularity, Canari is way more popular in Japan. Technically, the absolute number of tweets that refer to Canari positively in English, are higher than even English posts that reference Jacinthe. (Must be because Canari shows up earlier in game) But Jacinthe has like five posts (if not more) expressing excitement over her design in English that has thousands, or even HUNDREDS of thousands of likes. Canari doesn’t garner that level of hype in English, but there are multiple RIDICULOUSLY thirsty viral Japanese tweets about Canari, and more JP porn of her. Even when you look up Canari’s name and look up random tweets in Japanese, the way they talk about her is significantly more sexual than in English,

Canari is an easier design to appreciate which I think is why she doesn't really do much for me (also the redundancy of her happening after a character like Iono). She feeds into the current design traits that zoomers like and are obsessed with more. Same with Gwynn, Japan really likes her too

But I really think it's a game position diff that's affecting them. Jacinthe being at the absolute ass end of the game means you actually gotta work to get to her and she has a much more oppressive personality than most of the other characters which will always result in a more populated Western fanbase than Eastern. But on the plus side unlike most of the other female champions, she actually has an outright cutesy design which I think is going to make her a lot more popular than the likes of Iris, Diantha or Geeta (sans Rika shipping). She's in a very good place because her competition in Z-A is not very strong in general. People are only talking about the same handful of characters and right now women only care about stepping on Corbeau

I don't know about you but I couldn't care less about Jacinthe's popularity. Her being popular is good because it means we get more fan-art and content, but at the same time my love for her is not dependant of if there is a thread or not. If she has no fans, then I am dead.
It's not my first rodeo liking someone "unpopular". Perhaps this is even better because it means she is all mine...

I've been burnt before on banking on things that look cool being super unpopular and unappreciated and outright forgotten. Happened this year alone with one of my most anticipated games. I'd rather she at least maintain a moderate, die hard fanbase that loves her rather than an explosively popular one which has a bunch of retards and faggots projecting irrelevant shit onto her and is completely uncontrolled chaos. But I'd also like her to not be a Diantha and get like ZERO attention post-release because holy shit were XY characters such a dud. It was genuinely scary to watch the shiny new thing become completely forgotten in less than a year. There needs to be a level of nicheness and genuine appreciation to keep your heart from being broken from all the neglect I find

For me, Canari and Jacinthe are *roughly* on the same level design-wise. I don’t think Jacinthe’s design is perfect, even though I’d still rate it a an 8 or 9 out of ten, but I also feel the same way about Canari. I feel very iffy about Canari’s half mold green hair, and Pikachu tail shaped ears, it’s pretty garish to me. For the better, or the worse, she looks just like a super mass-appeal-catering flashy vtuber girl. Just a typical normal human vtuber characters that wears trendy clothes and has like 5 ultra saturated colors in their design. I like characters with brown skin in general, but I do prefer darker skin tones, which is rare to find outside of social media artists’ Original Characters. Also, certain character archetypes are depicted with dark skin (or just flat a racially black person) less frequently than other character types. It feels typical for Canari to be a light brown person (possibly just a naturally pale person with a tan), but novel for Jacinthe to be a black skinned oujo sama. If Canari was darker, I’d like her more. If Jacinthe was lighter? I think I’d actually like her less if she wasn’t at least as dark as Nessa, or Marina from Splatoon. The color contrast her design is built on is too low when you make her pale brown, and I flat out don’t think she looks good at all when you just make her a white woman

Jacinthe almost got the character for shotacon selfshippers, but now she has *both* of the top yumejo choices for ikemen-enjoyers instead (Steven, Volo). There’s appeal with Kieran, but I think I like the final choice better. (Adult men matches the picture you’re referencing better, anyway.) Good job on the art, anon!

Nessa had mostly a MASSIVE explosion at first but trickled out in the long run due to SwSh not doing shit with its characters and becoming completely irrelevant by the time SV came out. She still gets a lot of art, but only in comparison to ass old generations like I-IV. The biggest problem with her is she just doesn't have passionate fans that really ride or die for her

Jacinthe is going to suffer from being a late game encounter in a game where you'll meet like 5 other girls before her but I feel she'll retain a more modest popularity that continues beyond this game. Especially if they use her to rep the game's "Champion" role, which is an innate buff over most late game characters. Frequent reminders she exist by GF and TPC will be all she needs to maintain a strong presence in the fanbase. Diantha didn't get that

Yeah I'm a fan of Nessa and made a lot of fancontent for her, she's one of the prettiest designs I've seen in pokemon. But sadly I can't even say she's my 2nd, 3rd, or 4th favorite brown girl, as her archetype isn't particularly standout (but good for mainstream appeal) and the game didn't really give much to do with her personality-wise.
My favorites are Raifort, Jacinthe, Olivia, and Phoebe and they all have interesting and endearing personalities/concepts that give me enough to autistically obsess over them.

Editing black characters skintone white to cause ‘seethe’ has lost a lot of teeth. It still has people biting, of course, but what will REALLY cause an upset within the fandom is some well intentioned Japanese artist drawing Jacinthe with the wrong skintone, it gets called out by an English speaker, and then the rest is history. And I’ve already seen one Japanese fanart with Jacinthe looking real pale gray (pic unrelated, this is an uncolored fanart done by an Indonesian artist). I’ve also seen English complaints about pale Canari art.
Honestly, I don’t like wrong skin tone fan art either. But the benefit of both knowing how to edit, and being a person who uses 4chan is that I can just edit other people’s art for personal use, repost on 4chan if I want to share it with others, and not cause a massive internet drama that has lasting impacts on fandom and international otaku relations LMAO
