Taunie and Urbain feel like a step back in that direction again. Rivals mandated to be the opposite gender have always been because it's just the player character you didn't choose. Taunie and Urbain are characters they explicitly decided would be the opposite gender, and are clingy as fuck. If they're received well, you might see something a little more romantic in five years or so.
The player character is supposed to be (You), though. I don't think they're ever going to force a romance on you.
