Or, using an animal example, Komodo dragons are small, agile, and good climbers when they are born, but as they grow, they lose this ability because they no longer need it. A queen termite would be another example: she is born with wings, but when she finds a home, she grows disproportionately and loses the ability to fly.
As an analogy, a Tropius is the traveling phase of the species and when it finds a place full of resources it will move on to its territorial stage, ready to face any predator or rival.
