Honestly, I like the raw experience of attempting to get a good nature Pokemon for optimal usage. I would only ever consider it in a situation where I was playing alongside friends who I know would only take it as far as that and nothing else like breeding for perfect IVs. That's a really fun way to place and if there is someone reading who hasn't done that where you choose a level cap at a specific point in a playthrough to then battle against your friends on, I highly recommend it. If anything, I think it is a net positive for the encounter system due to having that variance as ultimately it's the player that decides whether or not they are okay with that.
My only issues with it are that they decided natures would be largely just for that purpose and especially after the generations with contests, this would effectively be their only purpose and the fact that they also never really explained what these different natures actually would do outside of a few NPCs alluding to the differences via dialog (ex: the guy in Slateport who I vividly remember saying "huh my Pokemon is a Jolly nature unlike my friend's Pokemon, I wonder what that means...?).

I rarely bother to hunt for a specific nature + ability unless it's something game-changing like Huge Power. The main times I bother with ability stuff outside postgame is when I breed eggs for other people. I always make sure I give people a good ability/nature with at least 6 perfect IVs, which isn't hard since I have a perfect ditto in Home that I've had since XY. It makes the game easier on them, which noobs actually need despite how easy the games feel to me, and I want them to treasure it instead of discarding it later.

Using different natures is a big part of competetive teambuilding. There's tons of examples of winners using an offbeat nature that works well. Everyone expects something like Adamant or Modest, so when they come in with Brave or Quiet for a trick room team it fucks a ton of people up. Or even using one of the Defense/SpD boosting natures to turn a 1-hit-KO into a 2-hit-KO from some popular meta mon.

I still enjoy breeding because I use it to fill out a living dex, or breed different competitive builds of the same mon because it can be cheaper/faster to do sometimes. But most of the time mints and stuff is way better. I would never want the new stuff removed, and I love having it available at the beginning of the game.

i don't know if you realized this but games are designed for people to play them. and mechanics are designed for people to use them. so the way people interact with mechanics is a very important thing to look at when analyzing them. and the fact that so many people reset to get the natures they want is a good sign that players don't see it as a fun shakeup to play around, they see it as something to be optimized.

Marowak, partly because I got a plushie of a Cubone when I was a little kid.
I always tried to get him, but I always thought he was a shitmon for a long long while because I didn't care enough about metagame until I was much older.
I admit he still isn't a particularly good mon, but at least he has a good item and abilities that aren't entitely useless (one which even works well with a move).
Shame he's entirely reliant on Trick Room.

In-game you're almost always "punished" for playing the game the way it teaches you. For example, you send out a psychic type to beat poison and fighting types, chances are most of that mons EVs will go into attack and defense in a game where almost every psychic attack is a special attacker. You don't need EVs to beat the game, but in an rpg emphasizing customization with moves and stats, they completely dropped the ball with how the player manages EVs for a decade.

When you actually need EVs to play postgame facilities, youre killing 120 rattata in a row. Thats just so unbelievably stupid I can't believe it was THE way you had to do it for like 5 gens.

It’s a nuanced system that is literally invisible unless you look for it. It allows for complexity and means you have to put some effort in to get a mon that is as strong as it could be. Then spending time developing the ev’s which, again, are invisible and are only noticeable if you are looking for them. I’m playing with the battle frontier in mind so I want to raise mon with the highest possible potential. But I know what I’m getting into and I don’t mind spending a long time fighting particular trainers to max ev yield.

Not him, but I did a replay of Heart Gold recently and grabbed a Larvitar with a shit speed IV and it made using him against the elite four pretty rough
It could definitely be the difference between a casual player liking or disliking a particular mon

You catch a Pokemon because something about it stand out to you. Shininess, IVs, Natures are built into the game for that reason, they make a Pokemon unique and attrative. In the Pokemon world where Pokemon are abundant and you can easily find one by walking in the grass, the only worthwhile thing to do is catching yourself a prize, a strong common Pokemon, a shiny Pokemon, a rare 1-5% encounter Mon or legendaries.

Settling for a shitmon is the least immersive thing you can do in an animal catching game. People who settle for shit mons are freaks. IRL, people are picky with animals: familes adopt pets that stand out, farmers and hunters aims for the most useful and coolest animals.

So you being picky when catching is natural and immersive. If I'm going to have a Pidgeot in my team, you better believe I'm going to try catch a top percentage Pidgey. There's a gorillion of them out there, I'm not a real Pokemon master if I don't attempt to catch a good one.

Some Magikarps are better than others and worth your time more than others.

I wish the games had more ways to lean into this further. In most rpgs you can use scouting abilities to learn about the opponent, I wish you could spend multiple turns gradually piecing together more info about the mon from least to most in-depth the more turns you use. Maybe if you've captured or battled so many it would already have a lot of the info filled out or wouldn't take as many turns because you'd be more knowledgeable about that dex species.

That tells you more about the game's difficulty. The game being so easy (AI are literally coded to not use the most effective Pokemon against the opponent) is a clear disadvantage in terms of replay value.
Most people won't bother with another main story run when the game is so easy.
But in some games, the battle facilities exist and you need good mons to enjoy this final stage of the game.

I did a platinum playthrough where I had to catch like 15 bronzor to get a levitate one and that's by far the most grinding I've ever done for ability/nature
