I think it’s because meowths can generate so much gold that there’s egregious wealth inequality. They’re based on those folklore cats with cold coins that were based on that Japanese practice of making lots of gold coins back in the day that nearly tanked the economy.

Why would the average person struggle to pay rent in the pokemon world? There seem to be far fewer people, tech is way more advanced, and Pokémon can build houses for free. It’s like anti-world building just because the writers can’t stop reading the news or keep that shit out of the workplace.

Most settlements seem close to third world tier in terms of development with mostly dirt paths, in a couple of regions there are gates between major cities and the outside just to keep wild superpowered monsters from wandering into human settlements, there are major terrorist groups in nearly every single region using Pokemon to bully the local populace, there's seemingly no functional police forces or central governments literally anywhere, most 10 year olds living in small backwater villages have no choice but to turn to Pokemon training just if they want to leave and start their own lives.etc

Why spend precious tax dollars on a large police force when most people have their own Pokémon. The system works so well that even children can help bring down crime. For example ex team plasma who believed in Pokémon liberation and the ex team flare grunts. The average person in the Pokemon world isn't going to be able to get their hands on a healing Pokemon let alone dedicate the time to train them to have healing moves. The player character is exceptional in Pokemon, that's why he's the main character, the vast majority of trainers only carry 1-3 Pokemon on them at most and rarely do they train Pokemon beyond level 45 because presumably it's really hard for the average person to do so. Healing Pokemon would certainly exist but they'd also be a niche even within the Pokemon world, and with any niche comes people wanting to monetize it.
