It really did feel like this generation had no proper direction with its Pokemon, the rather haphazard inclusion of Convergent Evolutions, the sparse and now seemingly extinct Regional Variants/Evolutions and just the tone a lot of the designs amongst the Generation IX Pokemon feel more like they couldn't actually come up with a proper dex in time and so scrounged up a lot of old ideas discarded from other generations and just used them to fill out the dex.
Compared to other generations even Generation VIII where I dislike the designs overall more, at least there's a sense of identity between most of the Pokemon, indifferent to any gimmicks.
