Yeah I agree. Tierno is not best battler but I do love the idea of character that has Pokemon and the dream is not to be pokemon master.

Always been the case. That's why older pokemon games had optional things like Contests, sports (poke Athlon) etc... In a regular playthrough they dont mean much because you are forced to be a trainer. But from a worldbuilding perspective, its there to imply that there are mutliple careers one can do with pokemon thay doesn't involve battling

The best part about Tierno was how when he's not in the scene but just mentioned by others, usually explaination was him doing some cool shit like meeting stone collector or sparring with karate king.
