why was there such a satanic panic around pokemon in the 90s anyways? all i can think of are evolution (which doesn't even resemble real-world evolution) and the whole abra line/baphomet allusions. it just sounds like grasping at straws for a reason to be mad

That's just how low IQ minds work anon. They find something they don't understand and instead of trying to come to an understanding of it, they will search for means by which to confirm their bosses and preconceived notions. And this isn't an "all people are so stupid" post, realistically the % of people who well and truly believed that Pokemon was satanic devilry was actually quite low, but boosting loud ignorant people is a huge revenue source for news channels.

You need to understand that Pokemania was insane. Like really insane. Everything was about Pokémon. Toy stores was mostly Pokémon. Every child was obsessed with Pokémon. Schools had to ban Pokémon cards because kids would get into fistfights over them.
Parents wanted an explanation for why children were so obsessed with Pokémon, so the whole "It's a satanic ploy" was easy to believe if you were a Christian simpleton. And additionally to that, there was indeed the evolution aspect of it, which hardcore Christians found blasphemous.

People ignorant about popular topics were fed silly information to reinforce their beliefs. Parents did not know what D&D was but heard it's about roleplaying and killing stuff so it was deemed evil.
