I agree. The first episode gives you the impression that Gary will be a good character, only for them to completely ignore him later. Even so, he managed to become more iconic than Blue, whose only redeeming trait is that he's highly ambitious and talented in battles. The writers of the first season had some great ideas and improved many aspects of the game

Yes, so what? There are characters who are just as annoying but still memorable. Gary, with his cheerleaders and sports car, has made more of an impact than any of Hop's whining. Sadly, they forgot that Gary is a version of Blue and therefore has to be Ash's rival. He's supposed to be his rival, but they barely have any battles during the series.
