Second, physical pokemon are just inherently better than specials in ZA. Physical moves are faster, less janky, and most of the common things making physical moves worse no longer apply.
Third, the ability to function without mega is a huge value. Megas are good, but being able to act without them is MASSIVE, and is something shitters like Mega Beedrill just can't claim.
For Gyarados, Bounce is pseudo protect with a counter that can Para. That alone would be good, but whatever combination of animation speed ect in the game ALSO means Gyarados is one of the fastest pokemon in the game. Hits hard, good coverage, can function independently of mega.
Metagross is mostly defensive utility. It's the best answer to both dragons, amd faries trying to kill your dragons. Also a good pokemon to have, to cold switch to. Also functions independently of mega (are you seeing a theme)
Garchomp is... well, Garchomp. It's a fantastic mega that doesn't meed it. It has incredible offensive coverage with very controllable weaknesses (see Metagross, which covers everything Garchomp is weak to). Very fast, does fuckloads of damage, and is bulky enough to survive nearly anything.
