Lovander did away with the pretense Salazzle had that actually makes Salazzle a bit offputting to some, and solved some of the "bald lizard" problem by giving it the kind of meat clothes Gardevoir has, and some fluff.
And even then, Lovander isn't really that popular. Rapelizards just... don't actually hit that well for most. It's a fun idea to lead with, Lovander was important for establishing the tone of Palworld, but Lovander itself is still not that popular for it. More than Salazzle, though, which is pretty strictly a scalie pokemon, moreso than even some blanket "dragon" pokemon. Lovander at LEAST has some more broad appeal into people with cnc kinks.
