Like it or not Pokemon used to be a lot darker and this is what I miss about Pokemon the most. Kanto was a seedy place with dark secrets hidden in the shadows. It wasn't some lighthearted carefree Pokemon paradise for kids to go on an adventure and have fun. It was dangerous.
Even by gen 2 a lot of this was gone. I believe it's because Gen 1 was not made or intended for an international audience. It wasn't expected to reach such massive global success the way it did. It was in some part a spiritual successor to the Mother franchise which is known for its similar dark undertones.
Now the whole series has been completely de-fanged. Even though GF constantly likes to bring up Kanto every time it's been made more and more cheery and bright.
