The best part is that he had Charizard and explicitly only Charizard for 90% of the series, then he got a Metang out of nowhere (though you could headcanon Steven giving it to him after he helped him), then the rest of his team materialized out of thin air for the league finals just to cuck Ash again.

This why i never expected ash to win. It was obvious from the start that they were building Alain up to be the one that defeats him. Alain has been showing fighting insane shit from the start.

Unlike DPP anime where you had a win against Paul to make Tobais sting less, XY didnt really have a "main" rival set up from the beginning that you absolutely wanted to see Ash defeat

I disagree, it felt like they were building up to Ash-Greninja winning, after Ash fought Alain twice earlier in the series - losing the first time, then doing better the 2nd time but Ash being unable to take the strain and vowing to perfect it.

But then no, they just have Ash-Greninja go down just like the first time.

The finals could've played out 100% identically aside from Charizard fainting instead of Greninja at the end and they would've made a lot more sense both thematically and storywise.
