What on earth is with this trend, you could even make an argument that Baxcalibur's posture is more akin to Arctibax as well but that ones a bit of a stretch.

What steel move(s) is it going to get? As far as I recall it learns a huge zero. ZA has kind of weird choices for Mega types, Clefable didn't learn any Flying moves until ZA too.

I understand it in the sense of having a broader appeal
if I like Chingling, but don’t like Chimecho, and Mega Chimecho is just more Chimecho, then I won’t like it
but if Mega Chimecho incorporates Chingling’s design, Chingling AND Chimecho fans will like it (in theory)

Besides Feraligatr and Raichu having questionable executions, I love this mega design trend. Does it make sense? No. Is it cute/cool and makes the designs more endearing and interesting? Absolutely. Rather than just being *more* of what they already are, they feel like fixed and powerful evolutions. Like Dragonite — it was always weird how little resemblance it bears to Dragonair. With Mega Dragonite, it finally looks like an evolution of Dragonair and pulls the whole line together. Love that shit.

Chingling’s shiny is lame, but Chimecho’s is excellent if you ask me, especially in gen 3 (good luck ever finding it in that gen though)

The orange on shiny Chingling is sublime and really pops on the DS screen. Shiny Chimecho is very nice, I would die for one in Gen 3.

It did sorta exist for some of the old ones like Ampharos regaining its wool, Metagross getting the Metang spike. Though a lot more subtle

Don't exactly mind it though, it feels like a celebration of the evolution line as a whole rather than just the final evo. It all comes down to execution

I think it's good when it feels like an extra nod in the design rather than the entire focal point of all of the changes
dragonite, pikachu, and feraligatr all feel like the design was built exclusively around trying to push the similarities rather than having its own concept and bringing in the other design features as a nod

That's what the Y megas are
Zard Y = Charmander Colors, Charmeleon head Spike
Mewtwo Y = Mew
Raichu Y = Pikachu
Feraligatr = Tododile
Starmie = Starfish Man aka Starmie
Ampharos = Prevos Wool
Scoliopede = Whirlipede's Armor making it an armored steed.
Dragonite = Wings and Orb

The X megas cover a more "The same but SUPER" neiche like Rai X/Zard X/Blaziken/Lucario etc.

This only alters out with non-evolving pokemon leaning into sides of their dominant traits or features.
IE. Absol having a more white/angelic forewarning mega, but a new mega would lean more black/evil disaster.
