Is Basuclin really that shit? Yeah, sure, it's a psychical water type, but it also learns Aqua Tail fairly early on, has a myriad of other physical moves to rely on, and its total BST is higher than Dewott's. Seems like it'd be okay on paper and I can't recall struggling with Basculin when I played Black, but that was also over a decade ago.

You could easily remove 75% of basculin's spawn locations and nothing would be lost.

Ah, that's your argument. Okay, that makes more sense. Yeah, Basculin is TOO available. It's basically on every route, and available through both fishing and surfing. That can get annoying.
Tentacool shares this same problem in Gen 1, but in Tentacool's defense, you either obtain it through fishing OR surfing, it's almost never available on a given route as both.

Those two alongside castform were probably the most soul destroying catch grinds I've ever done in a living dex.

Because after 4 games where a Water type was fucking mandatory to beat the game, 2 of which had 3 fucking HMs to its name, it's genuinely refreshing to have a game where Water was extremely downplayed. If you compare Unova's dex to DP Sinnoh's, majority of Sinnoh's dex is fucking Water types. That's how bad shit got by that point. Water is such a tiresome, oppressive type that's worse than Fairy in terms of exposure due to the high presence of Water routes in the Masuda era that ONE game without a plethora of options isn't going to be a complaint after Fire types had been demoted from Johto, to Hoenn, to especially Sinnoh

BW Unova is the ONLY game pre-Gen VII that didn't require you to use a Water type to beat it. And you fuckers still got Scald despite all this

Okay, but this being shit is only applicable to BW2.
In BW1, you have access to SEVEN WHOLE FUCKING WATER LINES before the 5th gym, and that's the ENTIRETY of the waterdex outside of the starter. That is a RADICALLY different situation to Diamond and Pearl's fire distribution, where there's only TWO FIRE TYPE LINES in the ENTIRE REGION.

Every time somebody complains about another type being worse off in another game compared to DP fire types it's fucking baffling, because I'm pretty sure the only other game with one consistent option for Pokemon of a certain type is Gen 1, where there's only one ghost and only one dragon line because the types were super late additions. To the dex giving you a total of 4 fire types which is supposed to be a rarer type and not obligatory for 100% compared to water which will always be necessary due to stab surf.
Your only real options for surf if you care about stats are frillish and Seismitoad and even them Seismitoad is questionable considering hes also a ground type.

5 options is a good minimum for Fire in a dex, Hoenn has 5 options (Blaziken, Magcargo, Camerupt, Torkoal and Ninetales). When a Starter option is limited to literally two options, one being the starter, it feels less like oversight and more like spite

B2W2 added Starmie so I didn't really have a need to use literally anything else. Water also generally just isn't a big factor until near the end of the game because Unova backloaded all of its Water routes like Kanto. The only time Water really would be useful before the older Water types start propping up is Clay, then for the end of the game a Water type isn't going to help you at all since you have Skyla, Drayden and Marlon to worry about

Water types don't matter as much in Unova as Fire types do in Sinnoh. In Sinnoh, Fire types are the solution to alot of pokemon matchups since Sinnoh mainly had Grass, Ice and Steel types. And then there's Bronzong, a Steel/Psychic type, and Abomasnow, Grass/Ice type, that basically requires a Fire type to beat. In Unova, if you had a Grass or Ground type, you'll do fine against the matchups that you would need a Water type for anyway. And some non-Water types can use surf like Stoutland and Audino, too.

For starters, I wouldn’t care about DP at all when we have Platinum which is just objectively superior in anyway.
Secondly, gen 4 dp is not even the first game to only have 1 species line for a specific type and technically its 2 counting infernape. See gen 1.
Fire wasn’t very common in gen 3 either with only 5 options.
Gen 2 and 1 also weren’t the pinnacle of fire type options either with the first and last for a while being magmar in gen 2 and i think you didn’t even see one in gen 1 until safari zone.
Starmie was definitely at least lategame in bw2, i remember the first time it appears is in that one town you fight cynthia in, undella i think. You get surf after driftveil iirc in bw2 making your best options for surf swanna and vaporeon or forcing you to basically not run a water type and use surf hm slave until the 8th gym badge

Sheer delusion. You can catch starly before Gardenia and a few bug types too. For Byron you can use ground, fighting or water types, same goes for Maylenes Lucario. You have access to all the fire types in the game by the time you reach the ice gym and you have tons of other type matchup options for it as well if you don’t wanna use fire.

Ghost as well. You get one more addition for both in ORAS though (Froslass). Ice-types are less annoying imo because every water-type option has Ice Beam to compensate. You don’t really get that with Flamethrower.

Hoenn also had the same issue with ice.
Unova is still limited but you have Swanna, Carracosta, Seismitoad, Jellicent, Alomomola, and Basculin as options. Very low but nowhere near as bad as base DP. NOTHING WILL.

To be fair to Hoenn, it more than doubled the number of ghosts with just two lines and it introduced about as many Ice types as the gens before it did individually on top of also adding easily accessible dragons. It was pulling its weight in rare types at the time.

Here's where your argument really falls apart though
>Gen III: Linoone, Masquerain (was a Water type), Exploud, Hariyama, Azurill (becomes a Water type), Aggron, Zangoose, Latias/Latios (post-game), Rayquaza (needs Surf in the first place)
Now of these mons that learn Dive:
>Latios/Latias and Rayquaza
So you would have to use Rayquaza as an HM Slave to ignore a Water type in this game, same as Lugia

>Gen IV: Snorlax, Rampardos, Garchomp, Weavile, Lickilicky and Rhyperior (these two are Platinum only)
Gen IV is the most generous since Gen I since it doesn't have 3 Water HMs, but none of these learn Waterfall

So really the only game you can conceivably get away with NOT running a Water type at any point is HGSS, since in GSC you likely won't be able to get Dratini until Blackthorne where you'll absolutely need to have already Surfed to Cianwood meaning you'd have to have used a Nido or Lickitung as an HM Slave... Or you can just catch a Water-type

The big two are Tropius and Bibarel. Both of them combined cover EVERY HM in Sinnoh. Platinum specifically added Tropius even though it has zero relation to anything Sinnoh-related (no new babies/evolutions or even lore) just because of this fact. It can basically do anything that isn't Water-related

Dragonite is a good HM Slave but that's a LOT of investment in just an HM Slave. But it does cover any cave traversal by itself

Dragonite slavery is probably easiest in exactly white 2
You get dratinis at level 50 and then benga gives you a shiny one
That’s how I even made this realization.
Going forward, in any game where getting an extra dragonite is reasonable, it’s going to be my goto

Do you guys actually run around with all the HMs on your team while making story progress? I tend to run Surf, Strength and Rock Climb and only have Rock Smash when it’s needed. Used to run Fly too but not anymore since I don’t mind backtracking as much and I never have Cut or Defog past the absolute required uses, Waterfall’s also so late that I just run it on my Surfer for Victory Road and then delete it.

In white 2 I like having all but dive when accessing all the grottos because it requires them
Generally though only surf and fly come up routinely

As the other anon said it depends on the game. Since Surf, Fly and post-Gen III Waterfall are actually decent in-game, it isn't as necessary to run on slaves. It's easier to run a Water-type shitmon to handle Water HMs when the time is right but the only HMs you'll ever really need at a given time are Strength, Surf and mid-series Rock Smash because they got really obsessed with that move for some reason

Strength would actually be really good if it were a Fighting move, especially in Gen II. It remaining Normal is genuinely baffling
