HGSS is a great game, but it's also very overrated. Emerald, Platinum and BW2 are all better than HGSS in terms of content. HGSS is also a downgrade from GSC visually, and its biggest content (the Battle Frontier) was directly copy pasted from Platinum.

So yeah, all things considered, HGSS is good but overrated when you look more into it.

I love HGSS, but I can take off the rose-tinted glasses and recognize its flaws too instead of pretending it's the absolute king. No game is king, they're all shit in their own ways that prevents any one of them from being definitively amazing, especially when there's so many features and ideas spread across all of them that there's inevitably going to be disagreements about which is "the best" because it's missing [obscure one-time-only mechanic from a game that's over 15 years old].

Everything aside, HGSS has consistently been the easiest game in the franchise for me to replay. Whether it's good, bad, mid, overrated, underrated, I can universally start a new playthrough and dump a few hundred hours into it.
It will always be one of my favorites by virtue of that alone.

I'm leveling up mine to try and catch one of the stupid ones, because having the met location is a trophy I want. I would never do this to actually fill the dex space though, I love wasting my own time but this shit is nuts

The issue is that the trainers are too low-level as well. I distinctly remember back when I was younger that I started running around the region to perhaps find any trainers I had missed. It's not even fun to fight them because there is no challenge. Barring the gym leaders there are barely any trainers who have strong enough teams to put up a fight.

The funny thing about Johto's level curve is that you don't need to grind at all before the 8th gym as the levels are so low and you naturally gain enough EXP. This means that you can catch any Pokémon and have it usable right away.
And after the radio tower incident you can just call trainers for infinite rematches.

3) fight that trainer
4) go to step 1
5) ???
6) PROFIT

Red isn't hard if your team is in the mid-high 50's or low-mid 60's. And you can reach these levels on a casual playthrough without any intensive grinding. It's not really the game's fault at that point if you're neglectful.

I just played the game normally, beelined to Route 43 after getting Surf and beating Morty, caught the Level 50 Magikarp, fed it a Rare Candy, and then swept Johto by spamming Tackle until I got some good TMs for it, then when I was able to go to Blackthorn I used the Move Reminder to give it the good moves from its level-up learnset.

Even with all those same levels of trainers your teams levels should average from mid-high 30's to low-mid 40's. Post Kanto Gyms-your teams should be mid-high 50's to low 60's. Play the game right you stupid fucking zoomie. If you skip trainers or focus on training only 1 or 2 Pokemon on your team that is not a game flaw it's 100% your fault because you're inept at team building so fuck you.

I will go as far as to say that these are the best remakes in videogames in general. Usually when a game is remade, there's tons of changes that either shift the tone or flow of the game in the name of new player attraction. HGSS does it in a very minimal way so its not too alienating with veteran players like for example the only thing that got streamlined is the aquisition of certain key items and HMs so that they're not missable so to say and encountering the boxart legendary as part of the story which i dont really mind, especially with how it has a wonderful presentation in both games.

As to the nitty gritty of it all, they pass with flying colors. Not only all original content is in there (save for game corner which DOES suck) but there's like double if not triple the content on top of it all as well, the modernization of certain features is welcome and doesnt feel out of place, side activities are there and also enhanced, characters are more fleshed out, handful of legendary pokemon events, online connectivity the way god intented it back in 2000. I honestly think that HGSS is the purest essense of pokemon in the entire series and its a bit saddening that we'll never get something of such quality again
