L does remember parts of his past by the end of the game and gives an explanation that confirms they more or less retconned lysandre's motives from XY into him genuinely wanting to make the world a better place (less about literal aesthetics), but was too focused on material deeds and eventually grew jaded and bitter when those efforts never saw any repayment and how shitty the world continued to become. i think that was probably why they made a point to tie lysandre into corbeau's backstory, to at least show a bit more of how he was once genuinely philanthropic and selfless before he went fucking insane.
