Enough time has passed, so it should be safe for me to reveal some internal shit that wasn't found in the teraleaks.
BDSP was a test, and its general reception made them consider it a failure.
The original plan was to have a single game being the remake of Platinum, with the companion game being PLA. There were going to be Pokemon exclusive to both games, so you'd need to trade between them to complete both Pokedexes.
However, the idea for remaking Gen 1 and 2 in a 3D engine was brought up by ILCA and it was decided to let them handle a Gen 4 remake to 'show what they could do'. The pokemon that required trading from the Platinum remake were repurposed into the spacetime distortion exclusives.
Dynamax was not planned for the Platinum remake, but discussions about reintroducing mega evolution started here but ultimately decided against as they were already working on the terastalization mechanic and they worried how players would react if Megas were reintroduced just to be taken away in less than a year.
BDSP development started off well, but Masuda started use his authority to force changes that didn't make much sense. It's because of him that TMs became single use again, and it took a lot of back and forth to get him to allow the use of Wild Pokemon for HMs as he wanted to bring them back properly.
Any Platinum elements were veto'd by Masuda, who thought that if the games sold well that ILCA could remake Platinum in the same style.
Morale was pretty low from that point onwards.
At one point he mentioned using the engine to remake generations 1-6 as part of a big 30th anniversary package. Sun and Moon weren't included because they deviated from the grid-based design.
The public reception to the games was enough to scare TPC and all future plans fell through.
The sad thing is, there's a fully functional version of Pokémon Red running in that 3D engine made by ILCA employees in their spare time that was used to pitch the idea that was used to pitch the idea.
