Only just started playing the Pokémon games, this is going to be my play order:

Gen 1: Fire red (mid way through currently)
Gen 2: HeartGold
Gen 3: Emerald
Gen 4: Platinum

How does this look? I may play the other gens afterwards if I feel like it.

Pretty decent start. If you're not sick of the series by Platinum, give Black/White and their sequels a try, and then you'll be done with the good games in the series

Because people have a hard time letting go of things they're familiar with (in this case, pre-Gen 5 mons). Whether you like it or not, it was undoubtedly a risky decision on Masuda's behalf.

Do you know the mechanic differences between gen 3 games (fire red/emerald) and gen 4 games (heartgold/platinum)?
It could be jarring to go from one to the other then back to the same one from before but if you don't care then you'll enjoy it just fine

The whole point of a new Pokemon game is... wait for it... new Pokemon! That was the case in GS, that was the case in RS, and that was the case in DP. BW didn't magically make people want to use Kanto Pokemon in a new game. That people actually believe that shows how delusional and easy to manipulate the fanbase is.

Pokemon is full of revisionism, just like "oh we hated we couldn't transfer our Pokemon to RS." It's BS, nobody gave a fuck, the fanbase just grew out of the series.

TL:DR, play every game you can get your hands on, that's the only way to see all biases in the fandom.

The main one is the physical/special split
Basically in gen 3 if a move uses your attack stat or your special attack stat is determined by the type of the move, meanwhile in gen 4 it's determined by the move itself
For example in gen 3 all fire type moves are special so flamethrower and fire punch both use your special attack, on the other hand in gen 4 flamethrower is a special move and fire punch is a physical move

The phys/spec split is not a huge deal for in-game playthroughs. Like whenever I play gen3/FRLG im aware of the differences, but actual gameplay wise, its not really that important. You can beat the game easily with suboptimial movesets. No one is going to be looking up stat's of mons anyways to see which base stat is higher.

Just play the game, and make sure your pokemon have good moves of your corresponding typing and you'll be fine
