>>58636749Before it was mostly just starters, as you couldn't just have a Pokemon be some vague mishmash of creatures to make something unique and now every starter's based directly on a specific thing, like Emboar being a Chinese warlord I forget the name of, or Incineroar being a heel wrestler. Or James Bond with finger guns. Or a siren mermaid (making male Primarina weird, and most being male.)
This gen in particular though, it's made worse because you've got designs that don't stand up on their own, like what the fuck's up with Pyroar's mane? It looks like shit and kills the gender differences.
Oh, it says "blaze" in Japanese, that makes it good now.
Feraligatr's stupid hood is dumb and sticks straight up, and the model has to be cheated for the gimmick to even work? Pshh, it's just a Kamen Rider reference, you wouldn't get it, pleb.
M-Starmie is lazy as hell like some rig swap in Smash and looks silly for some reason? Shut up, you just didn't watch that one Japanese show from the 90s (or whatever it's referring to, I forget.)
I don't think we've had a selection of Pokemon that lean THIS heavily on references before, where they're generally unappealing if you don't know the reference.
