It's pretty much the start of the real game. The early game was pretty much just the game waiting for you to reach the Lv 30s so you can actually have Pokemon to use Megas for the actual important promotion match trainers and Rogue Mega boss fights

If the water dungeon became available in the postgame with higher complexity than it would've had if it was the third dungeon then it would've been cool. ZA makes you do the 15 skipped ranks postgame at much higher levels and each rank from F to A has effectively two promotion battles since each main group has two leaders. The rank skip was done for pacing, not because they didn't have content.

A bit disapointed because it feels like mid game should have been more about the fighting guy hating on the wild areas. But i guess that it would have been too long for the story.
I still believe they should only have spawned one mega boss at a time instead of 3 it really drags. Keep the 3 dragons for the last one maybe but thats it.

The second half of the game really drags on and it becomes routine. Grind at night for the ticket, do 3 mega boss fights, do the trainer boss fight, repeat. Then for the last few, they throw errands in between those to pad it out even more.

After having to do the 15 matches in the postgame to get Floette I'm glad they skipped those 15 levels during the story. This shit would have been tedious as fuck.

You can't possibly have mega stones prior to the respective rogue mega evolved Pokémon, they're the only source of those stones in the game. It even leads to things like the Charizardites and the Blastoisite being available in the gem store but not the Venusaurite.

I'm a lifelong grassfag so I just assumed it did. Wouldn't have made much sense in hindsight if you picked Charmander though, I guess they would've probably made the rogue mega X and shafted Y as always. Also the Kanto starters are optional here, you could go the whole game without picking one up from the lab long after doing that rogue battle.
