Yes, the internet existed, but even for those that were lucky enough to have it, the internet didn't spoonfeed you anything and everything you wanted to know, you had to know where to go, how to go about your search and choose your search words carefully, and even then, you might still not find what you were looking for. There were plenty of rumors and fake codes and secrets, too, and it wasn't as easy then to verify/disprove stuff, and also, back then, some games really did have secret areas and codes and whatnot, and that's partly why video game magazines were so big. Honestly, as convenient as it is to have everything available to you today via Google, Youtube, AI and such, it does take a lot of the fun and mystery out of gaming, and of course nowadays, most developers don't even bother putting secrets in games, but rather stick consumers with paid DLC.
